Work undertaken for Doggett Jones
Buro Happold Anniversary Book
To mark a decade of practice in Northern Europe, Buro Happold commissioned a commemorative book to showcase their collaborative building projects across sectors including Education, Arts & Culture, Sports & Leisure, Public, Historic, and Commercial Buildings.
With over 178 pages and a vast archive of imagery, the design challenge was to create a layout system that felt dynamic yet cohesive. I developed a rhythm across the book using varied image treatments: some spreads featured a large hero image offset by smaller supporting visuals, while others used grids of small images to build pace. The unifying principle was the strategic use of negative space — mirroring principles from the built environment — giving room for content to breathe and for layout variation to remain structured and intentional. No two spreads were identical, but all adhered to an invisible framework, lending consistency across the visual narrative.
The cover design, rooted in Buro Happold’s brand system, featured overlapping circles and stepped lines forming an abstract ‘X’ symbol — reversed out of bold Scottish blue in recognition of their Glasgow and Edinburgh offices where many projects began.
The finished book was received with enthusiasm and pride by Buro Happold, seen as a confident reflection of their first decade in the region.
